Journey for John and More (Movies)

Well, I have literally done nothing in a while, but that's okay (well...) because tomorrow I'm going to a Decemberist concert with Cayla and Devon and then RIGHT AFTER, Amanda and I are taking the red eye bus to New York (the 1am one), getting in at around 5:20am, and getting in line to try and get into Late Night with Jimmy Fallon because JOHN KRASINSKI is the guest! Hellz yeah! Amanda was really concerned about the plan, and while I understood, I reminded her that this is the least adventurous thing there could ever be. It's not even spontaneous because I called her about it yesterday and we already bought our greyhound tickets.

The only thing I'm worried about is my money because the concert is $25 and the bus ticket is $19 one way! So, I think I'll be brown-bagging it to NYC. And I don't even have any food anymore. Yesterday I ate some dry Lucky Charms (which are left over from Vanessa-- they happen to be my least favorite cereal), a bowl of frozen green beans, which I microwaved and put butter on, and later some ziti with just butter and parmesan cheese. I'm not saying that's a TERRIBLE day. What I'm saying is that it was the very tail end of my food.

Also, I saw Up! two days ago with Matt! Obviously it was very nice. Pixar... they just don't disappoint... which makes sense because if you're going to spend like... a JILLION years making a project, you're gonna want it to be flawless... I mean you have the time. Also, Pixar has this ability to make everything sooooo magnificent. Like, the movie takes place in South America and the canyon and the falls are so beautiful and HUGE that it's kind of breath taking, even though it's an animation. Even the balloons and the house were astounding. And the bird. Beautiful. All that said, I think it's a LITTTTLE over-hyped. People said that it was better than Wall-e and I didn't think so. But I CERTAINLY didn't think it was bad at all.

Also I watched the movie Only You with Marissa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr.... I guess continuing with my shitty movies kick. It was interesting because it was the MOST early 90s movie ever! The soundtrack, particularly, seemed to be based subtly on Beauty and the Beast (really just the last song... you know exACTLY what I mean). And she has really short dark hair, pale skin, but dark lipstick. And lots of scarf action. Amazing. But it's about this girl who, as a child, really believes in soul mates and when she does a ouiji bourd and she gets this name (Damon Bradley) and then she goes to a fortune teller and the lady says the same thing. And then when she's much older and she kind of gets engaged to a guy who's kind of lame (oooobviously) and one of his friends calls to say he'll be in Venice and he can't come to the wedding and his name is... can you guess? Damon Bradley. So she freaks out and follows him to Venice with her sister-in-law (Bonnie Hunt) who wants to get a divorce... and they go all around Italy.

So half-way through the movie I was like ... this is the WORST movie I've ever seen. I got like... embarrassed FOR the movie, you know when you close your eyes and wince at the dialogue. BUUUUT then it twisted, which I probably should have foreseen but didn't because I had so little faith in the movie. And then it twisted again and again and again! And I gotta say, in the end I enjoyed it the way I might enjoy Runaway Bride (which I thoroughly enjoy!). Robert Downey Jr. is SOOOOO attractive and charismatic! I can't even take it! Seriously, he might actually make someone swoon. Also Billy Zane was in it-- and he was hot... but in that early 90s way.

Then I watched Dream a Little Dream, that movie with the Corey Haim and Corey Feldman, which I've been wanting to watch since I saw a little piece of it on TV like... 8 years ago. I LOOOOVE the Coreys. The movie was terrible though/ I didn't even totally understand what was going on.
So far my Corey recommendations would have to be:
1. Lost Boys. AWESOME Corey movie!
2. Lucus. No Feldman but who cares?

My Corey passes:
1. License to Drive. I don't totally remember it but I remember not liking it. I believe it was like Superbad... but less fun. But, I could just watch it again to check since I bought that one without watching it first.
2. Dream a Little Dream

I did see Silver Bullet, which is also a just-Haim one, but I don't remember if it was good or bad. I probably liked it because Corey Haim is sooo CUTE!

AAAAALSO last night, I watched Teeth, the movie about the girl with teeth in her vagina. Okay, I'm not sure if this is a spoiler or not but basically, she figures out she has teeth in her vagina... and then that's it. Then she's just biting off penises. Like... there isn't a plot or even an ending. And there is no good man. Even her doctor is an asshole. I just felt bummed out at the end because I thought ALL of the boys were really cute. I wanted at least one of them to not be using her. That being said, they clearly wanted it to be a cult movie (I mean... what else could it be?) and cult movies often break the rules on purpose. It certainly ended the way a cult film would. After all that, I DID enjoy myself while watching it.

I also watched Impromptu last night, which I've already seen like... four times. But, I really love it in the way that I love The Secret Garden. It's about Chopin and George Sand, the writer, and it's with Hugh Grant, Judy Davis and also Mandy Patinkin, Emma Thompson, and Bernadette Peters. I just wanted to recommend it.

Yeah, go ahead and count 'em. Four movies in one day. I'm not ashamed. Nay. I'm proud.

Yesterday I also joined goodreads.com, which is just a site for rating books you've read.  I think might be cool because I really only want to read books that people recommend. Plus, it'll probably make me want to read more (that's what netflix has done to me and movies). Although it does make me feel like I've only read 65 books in my life, which is probably close to true.

Jewel Vs. Jennifer Ehle

Jewel as I know her: Spirit cover.

Jennifer Ehle (with Colin Firth) in Pride and Prejudice. See the resemblance?  I was like "Jewel! Get out of the 1700s! What you doin', girl?!"

Jennifer Ehle regularly. NOW do you see it?

Media Run Down

This morning, after watching a weeks worth of Stewart and starting my Colbert, I decided to search all the late night websites for John Krasinski again and he WAS on Letterman the other day! Very short interview but I learned something new. Anyway, I purposely didn't say it before, but the ONLY thing that bothered me about Away We Go was that in some parts, particularly when it's just Maya and John, John Krasinski is GOLDEN! Like, he gets the character perfectly! But there are like... 3 parts where he, to me, seems to be slipping into Jim from The Office. But like... overall, there is more gold than not... but the three parts where I think he wasn't as good are the part where he talks to his parents, the parts with Allison Janney, and parts with Maggie Gyllenhaal (I know that seems like most of the movie, but it's not). If I had to guess (and I shouldn't be so presumptuous but I will), I would say that in The Office, he pretty much plays the straight man, the relatable one, the observer of all the crazy around him. But in this movie, he's a character just like everyone else... obviously not quite so crazy as Dwight, but still, he's quirkier than Jim. And so when he's the quirkiest in the scene, ie: when he's only with Maya Rudolph, he nails it. But when the scene has an even quirkier character, and he's observing and judging them, he slips into the straight man. That would be my guess anyway.

The other thing I have to mention is that I bought Sims 3 yesterday. Now... yesterday was June 5 and it came out the on June 2nd... so I had self restraint for nearly 3 whole days. But it's my only non-money gift for my birthday. So... there. I don't want to give a full report yet, but I did play for like.. a jillion years yesterday.

Also, here are some other movie reviews:

1. Pride and Prejudice (BBC): Something that struck me about this movie was that I got, I'm pretty sure, no more information from this 6 hour version than I did in the 2 hour Kiera Knightly version. I don't know how that's possible. Also, I was not bored.. it never really dragged.... so it's kind of an enigma. I still don't think it's the GREATEST love story ever like a lot of people always make it out to be, but I was still pumped that they got together at the end. Also, the Elizabeth Bennet character looked like Jewel.

2. Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic: It's a stand up show but... she is HILARIOUS!!! But I'm not sure if she some people would be really offended by her. I assume they would. But I've watched in 3 times!!! FUNNY!

3. The Other Sister: Very sweet and funny. Not much else to say about it. I mean... it's super straightforward, obviously unbelievably predictable, but sometimes it's just nice to watch something that seems really pure. Just to remember (or hope?) that it happens.

4. The Ten: I'd never heard of it and both Paul Rudd and Winona Ryder are EXTREMELY hit or miss... although I always like them individually. Anyway, super low budget but funny enough. It might be a little weird to be accepted by like... a huge audience.

5. Ma Vie En Rose: NOT to be confused with LA Vie En Rose. This one is about a little 7 year old girl in a boys body and how the family, who is initially supportive breaks down when the community is shitty. I really liked the perspective because I don't think you'd see it in an American film. I'm not positive, but I feel like an American movie would either have parents that were completely against their child, or parents that were like... starting a rally about it, some sort of hero movie. This one is parents trying to at least not be like... terrible but it's hard because it ends up affecting their job and home and stuff. Frustrating.

6. Dan in Real Life: Shmeh. It's exactly what you'd expect... I didn't really need to see it. It was well done but there wasn't anything special about it.

7. Nature: From Orphan to King: This was the Julia Roberts' orangutan special. It wasn't as amazing as I thought it might be, considering how crazy awesome orangutans are. I just didn't learn that much... although, of course, I got sad.  And Julia Roberts wasn't really in it, although usually stars are just in them so people will take notice... so I wasn't that shocked.

8. Sex and Breakfast: Terrible movie with Macaulay Culkin about people trying to revive their relationships with group sex. But sometimes I just like to watch a shitty movie, ESPECIALLY with Mac (Party Monster!).

9. The Last Word: It's Winona Ryder, Ray Romano, and the guy who likes the bag in American Beauty. Basically the bag guy plays the SAME character... and it's like.. the same music as American Beauty. The premise is that the bag guy rights suicide notes for a living... and he met Winona because he wrote her brother's suicide note and then the whole Three's Company thing happens with him pretending he was a friend from college etc etc etc. What I want to know is, how am I supposed to believe that someone could make a living off of suicide notes. Even in the biggest city in the world, you're not going to get enough people to PAY for their suicide notes to sound smart and deep. Plus, the guy would have sessions with the clients, make them keep a journal so that he could use their real thoughts. I just can't suspend my belief for that. I can watch Star Trek and believe for 2 hours, but that's too ridiculous.

Finished The Time Traveler's Wife. That was amazing! I loved it.

My next movies are Cider House Rules, This is Spinal Tap, and Run Lola Run.
And also I am LIKELY seeing Up! with Matt today, which I heard was AMAZING!

Porn Snooze

And more sex at 11:48am...

I'm just saying I'm not making this shit up! It's like I hit the snooze on my porn alarm.

I'm Not Doing It

Ken (4:53pm): Anything ud ask a guy

Ken (8:37pm): So no questions! :)

Blythe: nope

Ken (8:58pm): Well I don’t have kids

Ken (10:10pm): What age guy do you normally date?

June 6

Ken (10:52am): So do u have any nicknames? Do u go by bly or anything like that?

Yeah I'm not doing this. I don't care. I don't want any of it this bad.

(Also, as I type this my neighbors are LITERALLY rattling my lamps and screaming with all the sex. It's 11:14am. It's like my own porn alarm.)

Away We Go, My birthday, and ... Ken

So many things!

First of all, I DID go to the free screening of Away We Go and I REALLY enjoyed it! I really love character driven movies! AAAAND pregnancy is my favorite genre... particularly teen pregnancy but any will do. And John Krasinski was SO CUTE I could have shot myself in the face! Like... SUPER cute! Like... if I (in my dream beyond dreams) had to choose between Jim from The Office and Burt from Away We Go, I would choose Burt. Very tender. Better than I expected. I REALLY want to see it again, and I shant feel bad when I do because I got in for free the first time.

Also it was my 21st birthday! Amanda came up and we went out and celebrated with Natalie, who shares my birthday (and a BUNCH of other people too). I had my first legal drink, which was some birthday shot that Caroline bought for me, and I got a cosmopolitan... 'cause I'm classy/ influenced by Sex and the City. And then Amanda and went home and she had gotten me a cake, which was delicious.

Then the next day we woke up to the love-making upstairs at around 11:30am, which I must say, Amanda doesn't think is quite as fun to wake up to as I do. We putzed around (I am sooo nearly done with The Time Traveler's Wife! It is greaaaat!!)and watched The Office all day (so... basically what I do every day) punctuated by phone calls from my family. Then we went out to get Indian food with some people. And then everyone (Pretty, Matt, Amanda, Cayla, Olivia, Steph, and Caroline) came back to my place and we drank a little and played on sporcle.com (DON'T GO THERE UNLESS YOU ARE BORED... or else you'll NEVER escape!).

Also, I want to mention that Caroline has a Zipcar subscription (I don't know if it's called a "subscription") and it's SUPER awesome. You pay $50 a year and then you can have access to these cars... which are real cars. They are parked in parking lots all over and you just reserve them online for the exact hours you're going to use them and then you pay $9 an hour for the car. And you don't even have to fill it up with gas! So Caroline got one the other day to run some errands, pick up her visiting friend, Sam, from South Station and she also helped me get my box of movies and my box of paints and my guitar from her apartment and Cayla's apartment. Then we went back to Olivia, Steph, and Raven's place and chilled for the night. it was great.

Ok but the real story is (and I couldn't decide whether or not I was going to write it or not.. but I guess I am) is that when I was in the theater alone waiting for Away We Go, I ended up talking to this guy next to me for a while... which... isn't really unusual for me... I talk to strangers quite regularly as... I feel most people who know me know. So whatever, we talked about movies and stuff for about a half hour. He used to live in LA because he wanted to write for movies and he goes to free screenings all the time. Whatever whatever. The movie starts, we watch it, he says MAYBE one thing to me during the movie.. but it wasn't annoying or anything.

Then the movie ends and I turn to him and say:
Blythe: Well I really enjoyed it.
Ken: Me too. It's playing again next week. Do you want to go?
Blythe: (To the movie... we just saw?) Um... sure.
Ken: Ok let me give you my number when we leave the theater.

We leave the theater. Exchange numbers. I am now nervous. We walk out to get the T.

Ken: If this was a date, it would have been my best date in years.
Blythe: haha... thanks
Ken: Can I ask you something?
Blythe: Go ahead.
Ken: Are you single?
Blythe: Yes.
Ken: Good
Blythe: I'd better go though.
Ken: Why?
Blythe: Well my friend is here from New York because it's my birthday tomorrow (*Which we had previously discussed) and she's just putzing around in the city until I let her into my apartment.
Ken: Oh well can I have a birthday hug.
Blythe: umm sure...

We hug. I leave.
Ok. That's the kind of cute part, albeit I once again proved that I can not be trusted with strangers. Whatever. If I was telling this story in person, I am pretty sure I might be a little more specific about what I think about him at this point, but here I'll just write that I didn't walk away swooning... which ... you know... doesn't mean anything... except you know what I mean. Ok.

So in the T my cellphone doesn't work because it's underground. When I emerge, Ken and I have the following text conversation:
(Note: Please try not to judge neither the fact that this happened NOR the my actually typing it out this way... both will be VERY hard to refrain from judging)

JUNE 2

Ken(9:16pm): So did I enter the number right?

Blythe: yeah you did!

Ken (9:25pm) I’m proud of myself. I almost was a coward and didn’t ask for your number

Blythe: haha I wouldn’t have been able to do that

Ken (9:30pm): do what?

Blythe: I’ve never asked for anyone’s number before

Ken (9:32pm) Were you hoping I would ask?

Blythe: haha I honestly hadn’t thought about it

Ken (9:34pm) Oh I sat through the movie trying to figure out how to ask

Blythe: haha well I hope you got to enjoy the movie!

Ken (9:36pm) I did. So u were surprised I asked?

Blythe: I was

Ken (9:37pm): Why I thought we hit it off

Blythe: haha well I’m going to go out with my friends and I might not answer as much. I just don’t want you to think I’m ignoring you. But give me a call later in the week.

Ken (9:40pm): That’s fine

Ken (9:40pm) I’ll at least call tomorrow for ur birthday

Blythe: oh thanks

Ken (9:42pm) Thanks for the hug

JUNE 3

Ken (12:00am): Happy birthday

Ken (9:40am) Good morning and happy birthday

Blythe (3:10pm) Thank you!

Ken (3:16pm) You are welcome. Getting shit faced tonight?

Blythe: haha we’ll see...

Ken (3:18pm) No flashing anyone :)

Ken (3:25pm) U said u had facebook right?

Ken (9:11pm) So how trashed are U?

Blythe: it’s 9:30!

Ken (9:35pm) So it’s an important birthday :)

JUNE 4

Ken (12:21pm) Are u hungover? :)

Blythe (9:40pm) I did not get hungover. But I had a lot of fun!

Then he accidentally called me, or something.

Ken (10:27pm) Sorry in car with nephew

Ken (10:40pm) We went and saw the hangover

JUNE 5

Blythe (12:12am): Really? And?

Ken (12:26am) I loved it saw it last week

Ken (10:24am) I’m sorry about last night

Blythe (3:42pm) What are you sorry about?

Ken (3:53pm) Not answering ur call last night

Blythe: I thought you called me accidentally. I didn’t mean to call you

Ken (3:55pm) Oh ok. Any plans for the weekend?

Blythe: I’m going to see up with my friend tonight

Ken (3:57pm) I have my nephews graduation tonight. I sent u a friend request on facebook

Blythe: I know and thank you. I just feel like that’s a lot of information to give at once... I just want to be cautious. If and when I know you better we can be facebook friends.

Ken (4:03pm) Oh ok. I just thought we could get to know each other. I enjoyed talking with u and would like to see u again

Blythe: Well we were already going to go to another movie. I just hve so much on facebook and I just want to make sure I’m not being careless with myself.

Ken (4:07pm) I just thought we hit it off pretty good. I guess I saw it differently than u

Blythe:That’s not what I’m saying. I am just saying that regardless of what I think about anyone, I feel unwise giving someone I just met all of my information

Ken (4:10pm) Did u think we hit it off? Did you walk away interested?

Blythe: I said yes. I didn’t mean to upset you but... I can’t do something that makes me feel insecure

Ken (4:23pm) Its not upsetting, its ok. I just thought u were really cute and i think we’d have a lot in common

Blythe: Well thank you. I just need to know you longer. But we can still go to a movie

Ken (4:25pm) Ur welcome

Ken (4:27pm) Would u be interested in hanging out and watching a dvd sometime?

Blythe: Maybe but how about we do something public first

Ken (4:30pm) Sure just seeing if that’s something u could see doing with me

Blythe: I think so (*I would say that was my stupidest line)

Ken (4:33pm) Good me too. U have any questions for me?

Blythe: Like what?

Ken (4:53pm) Anything ud ask a guy

Also... he's 32.

Scam, Day Plans, Pre-Hypochondria

It's getting to be pretty nice being by myself all the time. Before I kept feeling like I should be with people more, but now I'm really enjoying the alone time.

One of my three job requests got back to me yesterday. They got so far as to offer me a job and while I was very excited, I had to call Caroline and see if she thought I was being scammed. We didn't draw a conclusion but just as I hung up, Amanda called and so I asked her if she thought I was being scammed. We weren't sure either. I ended up googling it... and indeed I WAS being scammed. So... lame.
Details: It was for a mystery shopper (which absolutely DO exist) position. But they didn't ask me to meet them or anything and the first job was to send a money order thing through Western Union. Whatever... I'm glad that I realized it was a scam, but I feel pretty confident that there was no way they would have gotten my money.

So ANYWAY, I went to the gym again yesterday, which was awesome. But I didn't take a shower right afterwards... but my hair is DISGUSTING... like I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to bring myself to leave the house with this hair. So I could either take a shower and then go to the gym and then take a shower AGAIN... which ... I'm sad might have to be the case because I get really worried about over washing my hair... because I don't want the oils to get confused... whatever. Just know that I detest washing my hair before the 24 hour mark... and I prefer to reach the 36 or even 48 hour mark if I can. I guess it won't be terrible if I do it just once.

But also, there is a free screening of Away We Go today at 7:30. I don't have a printer to print out the ticket so I'd have to get it done at Kinkos AND I have to be there like... an hour an a half early because... such is the way with free screenings.

Also, tonight Amanda is coming over! And we're going to my friend Natalie's birthday ... which is the same as my birthday. So I guess I'll be buying my first legal drink tonight!

I honestly haven't decided what I want to do with my own birthday. I think that I want to get Indian food... and Amanda and Matt will be with me... and Caroline is going to hang out, if not for dinner than after. But I can't decide if I want to make everyone feel like they have to come. I'm leaning towards no since it would be tomorrow.

Also, I feel a little bit like my body is falling apart... which is weird because I thought I'd been doing some pretty good things with it recently. I'm going to list what I am referring to which... surely is the first step to hypochondria.

1. I just started getting allergies. I never remember having allergies before these past few months. The other day it was almost as if I had a cold. I couldn't sing in the shower because I kept sneezing. It was bizarre.

2. I now basically need to wear my glasses all the time... anytime I'm going to actually be focusing on something far away. You see (ha), only one of my eyes is bad... but it's like way worse than the other, but my 20/20 eye would compensate so I could see perfectly unless my good eye was being compromised. But I got the glasses so that my bad eye would stay strong so I wouldn't get lazy eye. I was supposed to wear them for an hour a day. But now I need to wear them all the time because either my "good eye" is getting worse (likely a little... but it's actually not that much worse) or my bad is just always on the ball now and it's compromising my vision when I don't wear glasses (I'm pretty sure this is the case because if I look at a screen from far away with both eyes, it's difficult for me to read it, but if I use only my good eye, I can read it better. If I put on my glasses, I can read it the best

3. I had a huge headache the other day that I couldn't get rid of for a while. I guess that isn't my body breaking down per se... but it sucked. And more importantly, I couldn't determine the cause because I haven't really been drinking caffeine, so it wasn't related to too much or too little caffeine.. and I am almost positive I wasn't dehydrated... although I had drank a lot of water just in case. After probably 1.5 hours of drinking water and tea.. I remembered that I could just take ibuprofen. I think that worked but I may have gone to sleep or something. Hard to say.
